Christchurch has stood at the heart of Sandfields since 1872, seeking to bring hope, love and peace, and offering steadfast support to the local community for generations. From strong links with nearby primary schools to its role as a garrison church supporting the armed forces, Christchurch continues to be a place of welcome, connection and care.
Today, Christchurch is growing and so is its vision. With a wide range of groups and activities already running from its premises, the church is looking to expand its reach and deepen its impact. From youth clubs and toddler groups to the veteran’s hub, community café and craft sessions, the church is becoming a vibrant hub of support for people of all ages and backgrounds.
The introduction of five years of free broadband, provided by Virgin Media O2 as part of the Dark Fibre East project, is helping Christchurch take a significant step forward. This contribution is part of the social value being delivered through the Digital Infrastructure Programme, and it’s already opening up new possibilities for digital inclusion, training, and support.
Reverend Mark Thomas said:
Having fast broadband at Christchurch is already transforming what we can offer. It’s helping us support people more effectively—whether that’s through digital music sessions for children, online benefit guidance, or simply being able to stream services and events. It’s a huge step forward in our goal to become a hub of support for the local community.Reverend Mark Thomas, Christchurch
With broadband in place, Christchurch is developing:
● A digital music production stream for children as part of its new Music for All programme
● A digital side to its Open to All youth club and toddler group
● A veteran’s hub that now serves as an official warm space
● A community café with a dedicated special needs table and craft café
● Plans to support local schools with overflow after-school clubs and school holiday programmes
● New sessions for financial advice, employment support, benefits guidance, and IT training, in collaboration with the Good Things Foundation
● Enhanced digital capabilities for church services, online streaming, youth and student nights, family fun days, and seasonal events
With connectivity now in place, Christchurch is well-positioned to grow its role as a trusted, inclusive space where digital access supports real change and strengthens the fabric of the local community.
