Swansea has taken another step towards becoming a leading digitally connected city, following the completion of a major broadband upgrade.

Delivered by Virgin Media O2 in partnership with Swansea Council, the work - carried out between June 2025 and May 2026 - supports the aims of the Swansea Bay City Deal Digital Infrastructure Programme by strengthening the city’s digital network and helping prepare Swansea for future growth.

Rather than replacing Swansea’s existing broadband network, Virgin Media O2 upgraded and enhanced it while installing new full-fibre connections alongside it.

This meant residents and businesses could continue using their services with minimal disruption while the new technology was introduced.

The upgraded network already supports ultrafast broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps and is capable of delivering upload and download speeds of up to 10Gbps in future.

This will help meet growing demand for digital services and support new ways of working, digital healthcare, smart technology and innovative businesses.

A key part of the project’s success was the close working relationship between Virgin Media O2 with Swansea Council’s Streetwork’s team and its local digital champions.

Careful planning and close coordination helped ensure the work was carried out responsibly and with as little disruption as possible.

Cllr Rob Stewart, Swansea Council Leader, said:
